At least it can be done! With my old E46, the battery was dead and the key doesn’t come apart because it’s supposed to charge, somehow. But it was quite dead in any case, so I had to cut the key in half, then glue it back together. Worked fine, but... come on.

So my E92 M3 has a fob, luckily I have comfort access so the battery does not charge from being inserted in the key spot. I can replace it as needed.
